Septembers Fans United Safe Standing Day at Wycombe Wanderers Adams Park was a soar-away success, with fans of more than 30 different clubs taking to the terraces to support the campaign for Safe Standing areas at football grounds in England and Wales.
Fans travelled the length and breadth of the land to attend Wycombes League One (sic) London derby with Brentford, with clubs as far afield as Manchester United, Newcastle United, Stoke, Sunderland, Wrexham, Cardiff and Swansea all represented.
Fans flocked from all corners of the capital, wearing the colours of Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United, Arsenal and Queens Park Rangers, amongst others, whilst followers of clubs from further down the pyramid, like AFC Wimbledon and Hampton and Richmond, were also at Adams Park as the FSF/Stand Up, Sit Down Campaign continued to gather momentum.
Wycombe Wanderers MD, Steve Hayes, who regularly stands at the match, and former Blues defender Roger Johnson, both entered into the spirit of the Safe Standing day, watching the win over Brentford from the Hypnos Valley Terrace.
People want a choice and life is about choices - certainly feedback from our fans suggests some of them find football more enjoyable if they can watch it from safe standing accommodation and, after all, the atmosphere is simply non-existent at some of the all-seater grounds these days,
Wycombe MD Steve Hayes said. I am a passionate believer in the right to stand at football - I never sit in the directors box when I watch Wycombe play away; I much prefer to stand behind the goal with the rest of our fans.
The board and supporters of Wycombe actively back the campaign for safe standing and we believe that every supporter should have the right to choose.
MEP Sharron Bowles and Laurence Jones, Chief Executive of AFC Bournemouth, were also in attendance, while Amanda Matthews and her Stand Up Sit Down campaign team joined Football Supporters Federation Chairman Malcolm Clarke and members of the FSFs National Council.
The Fans United Safe Standing Day was a resounding success and all credit to Wycombe Wanderers for taking the initiative and responding to their supporters wishes by expressing their support for the campaign for Safe Standing, FSF Chairman Malcolm Clarke said.
It would not have been possible without the contributions of many people, none more so than Wycombe Wanderers PLC Director Ian Mather, who, we understand, worked tirelessly to make the day happen, along with Adams Park Safety Officer Richard Stanford.
The supporters who travelled to
the game were delighted with the reception that Wycombe Wanderers
gave them all and were full of praise for the fact the
club is working to highlight the need for Safe Standing accommodation
at all levels of the game. We hope more clubs will follow their
excellent example
